Ghost Tape Vol. 6
Ghostpoet threw up an hour long mixtape for us to listen to on soundcloud. It’s #6 of the Ghost Tapes. No tracklisting yet, but he promises one tomorrow. A lot of glitchy and smooth r&b and hip hop stuff alternating in here, though I’m not too far into the mix yet. It’s amazing the man is such a great live hip hop performer and lyricist, and such an amazing producer and mixer...

Jinja Safari
Jinja Safari is an Australian band, and I had the luck to stumble upon them just now. Here’s their video for one of the more recent singles, Sunken House. They integrate certain African instruments and rhythms to create an interesting folksy, melodic, and islandy sound. Their music almost seems like a blend of Sigur Rós post-rock with Temper Trap pop rock. The song is a lush, delightful...

Wooden Shjips' guitar heavy KEXP session
Wooden Shjips did a four track session for KEXP back in August, and KEXP has finally uploaded the full performance. The four songs within the set include: Black Smoke Rise, Lazy Bones, Home and Flight. The San Francisco psychedelic rock band tear it up on the guitars, and it’s a great, enjoyable and rawkin’ listen.

Skrillex Orchestral Suite
Wow, what the heck? I just saw that Skrillex uploaded this on his official youtube channel. It’s an orchestral suite by Varien. Not too clear on who or what that is, but I clicked play, and it really is an orchestral suite of Skrillex songs. This is awesome! Here’s the times and tracks within the suite:
Intro [0:00 - 0:45] With You, Friends - Skrillex [0:46-1:41] Scatta - Skrillex...

Shearwater's Animal Joy
Wow, why have I not heard of Shearwater before? I’ve just been blown away by a beautiful song off their upcoming album Animal Joy, however, I cannot find a version to embed and share directly yet despite frantic searching. The song is Animal Life, and the only place to hear it right now is streaming off of NPR, so please go there and check it out, it’s amazing and has some very...

Underworld: Awakening soundtrack
Sheesh, they’re making a fourth Underworld film. I don’t know about you, but I thought the first couple were pretty disappointing. I didn’t even bother to watch the third one yet. I guess people will still flock to see it, like so many other film sequels. Maybe they’ll do a better job on this fourth one, we’ll see. After all, the dark storyline and feel of the film...

Folksy New Year
The Christmas music onslaught is dying down, but now we have a handful of New Year’s music floating around. Here’s another New Year song, this time an original folksy, country track from English singer songwriter Frank Turner in conjunction with country singer Jon Snodgrass. It’s a very nice, warm tune to ring in 2012!

Zooey and JGL
Adorable! Even if you aren’t a huge fan of the film 500 Days of Summer, ya gotta admit, Zooey and Joseph Gordon-Levitt have such great, dorky cool chemistry. And if you like 500 Days of Summer, even better! Turns out, JGL and Zooey Deschanel are best buddies in real life (and not jilted lovers… yet?). They recorded this cute little cover of Nancy Wilson’s What Are You Doing On...

Justice remixes
On’n’On is an EP that will release in January from Justice on the Ed Banger label. It will include several remixes from their latest French electro house masterpiece Audio, Video, Disco. Today, two of those remixes were previewed. The first one is title track On’n’On remixed by Brodinski, which is decent but not great, and the second is a remix of Canon by Tiga. This...

Simple Plan's Jet Lag featuring Kelly Cha
Whoa. Simple Plan just shared this awesome video of their song Jet Lag, featuring Chinese singer Kelly Cha. It works beautifully! Well done! In Simple Plan’s own words:
Check out this version of the “Jet Lag” video with Chinese singer Kelly Cha! Pretty cool to have so many amazing versions of this song.. I like! Who cares if you don’t speak the language? Heart, heart,...

Corsten's Countdown 235: Yearmix 2011
I used to be a huge Ferry Corsten (aka System F back in the day) fanatic in my old trance crazed days when I always purchased import Ministry of Sound: Trance Nation albums from Europe, which had a number of editions that were mixed by the world renowned producer. I still have a lotta love and respect for the veteran, who’s stayed strong throughout the years with his talent and ability to...

Wolf Gang
London rockers Wolf Gang just released their debut album Suego Faults in the US last week, though it’s been out in the UK. Here’s a couple of the first singles and official videos. They sound polished and lush. The songs hook you easily. Wolf Gang definitely has the potential to be a big contender in the alternative rock scene. I’m totally digging the bunny masks and feel of...

FOE on Secret Sessions
FOE performed an acoustic version of The Fox on Secret Sessions, with an eerie audience of stuffed animals in the background. And no, I don’t mean cute little plush animals, but actual, dead animals in a taxidermy shop. It does fit the whole “fox” thing and the underlying darkness in the grungy track. This acoustic performance is gorgeous. Keep watching after for a short...

SBTRKT B-side
Ride to Freedom is the B-side for the upcoming single Hold On from talented soul and post-dubstep producer SBTRKT. It’s definitely a sweet track!
And here’s the single Hold On, also a great song. Love the beats on these. And the vocals on Hold On are sugar coated delicious.

OFFICIAL VID: Exitmusic - The Hours
This video has been out since August, but I just learned about Exitmusic after realizing the indie synthpop band is made up of Aleksa Palladino and her husband Devon Church. For those that watch Boardwalk Empire, one of my favorite high quality television shows residing on HBO, you may recognize Aleksa as Angela Darmody. I had no idea she is a musician on top of acting. Exitmusic toured with...

Elastica cover by Telekinesis
Michael Benjamin Lerner of the awesome Seattle indie rock band Telekinesis covered the old Elastica song Annie, bringing a more garage, lo-fi, impromptu feel to it. I’m very glad to have seen Telekinesis’ 12 Desperate Straight Lines on so many end of the year best of lists, as I had not realized the album was so well received. Good, well deserved. Here’s their version of...

Sound the Sky
Sound the Sky is an alternative rock band from Southern California. Below are their trax available on soundcloud. You can also download their songs for free on their official facebook. I’ve had the pleasure of corresponding on the internetz with the lead vocalist a few brief times, and she seems very humble and friendly, on top of having that great voice. Check out their music streaming...

Eyes Like Mirrors
It’s time for some post-rock, folks. Today, I bring you a South African post-rock band named Eyes Like Mirrors, whom someone kindly shared with me. If you like Explosions in the Sky, This Will Destroy You, or God is An Astronaut type of cinematic math & progressive rock, you’ll probably enjoy this. Here’s their free five song debut EP Crusades from earlier this year, which...

OFFICIAL VID: Uncles - Bayberry Lane
Once you get past the initial surprise at the type of falsetto sound utilized for the vocals, Bayberry Lane turns out to be quite a nice song from Queens, New York indie band Uncles. The soft track is off their new album m4w. Below is the official video. Yes, not the strongest vocals, but perhaps that’s all part of it. It makes it sound a lot more raw and vulnerable.

Retro Modern Mashup!
Ellie Goulding shared this wonderful mashup of her song Lights and the classic ABBA track Super Trouper. It’s a mashup of both a retro moment and a recent goodie! And it sure works well too. Totally loving this. ABBA is timeless! The mashup and video mix is by Reborn Identity. Swedish disco pop plus Brit pop for the win!
ABBA vs Ellie Goulding - Lights Are Gonna Find Me (mashup) from...

Yayo
Yayo might not be brand new music for your ears from Lana Del Rey, as there were unofficial versions floating around online for a long time, but our favorite sadcore, controversy laden, vintage pop artist released an official recorded version of it, and it sounds gorgeous. I’ll continue looking forward to the release of Born To Die in early 2012! Yayo is very smoky, somewhat jazzy and...

Latest The Hood Internet mashup
The Hood Internet is crazy good at putting together mashups of indie, rock, pop and hip hop. Through their mixing, the duo has combined some of the most surprising matchups ever, but they do so too well. Their latest mix is titled Raining Bricks, a combo of Gucci Mane and Slayer. Go to their website for free mixtapes and downloads of countless other mashups, some of which are absolutely...

Diplo's Express Yourself
In a few short days, Diplo is releasing a brand new EP for FREE, titled Express Yourself. The EP features guest collaborators including Excision, Sabi, Datsik, LAzer Disk, Billy the Gent, GTA and Elephant Man. In preparation for the arrival, Diplo posted a MEGAMIX sampler of the EP. Moombahtonnnnn in the house! That’s gotta be one of the funner recent genres to say out loud.

Digitalism mix
Here’s an awesome remix of some sorts from Digitalism. In their own words: “Stimming - Funkworm / Digitalism Replay xms, Who made Who - Inside / Digitalism Rmx, something special ;)”. The mix is a dose of super French electro house goodness, as expected from Digitalism, and it feels too short.

OFFICIAL VID: Jessie J - Domino
Not the most exciting video, but here’s Jessie J’s official one for her song Domino. The pop star may remind people of Katy Perry, but her voice and talent far exceeds that of Perry (whom I believe is more talented than she seems but doesn’t really show that nowadays, as she started out as an acoustic singer songwriter in small venues). The song Domino is alright though, not...

DJ EARWORM 2011
I knew it was about time to check for DJ Earworm’s end of year mix!
Here it is, DJ Earworm’s epic mashup, United State of Pop 2011 (World Go Boom). I love how he always mixes the videos too. So, what do you think? Better than United State of Pop 2010 (which I thought was okay)? How about 2009 (which I thought was absolutely incredible)?
Remember, this is 100% an American...

Skylar Grey's Buried Sessions
It’s been awhile since I’ve listened to or shared any material from Skylar Grey, but over the weekend, she posted a couple of recordings from a set she titled “The Buried Sessions of Skylar Grey”. For those that doubt the beauty of her voice and her songwriting ability due to her mainstream hip hop collaborations, here’s proof for you otherwise. The talented...

More The Milk Carton Kids

As some of ya figured out after the last post, these guys are going on tour to a city near you, so if you like their folksy music so much, go catch them live! I’m definitely going...

OFFICIAL VID: Parachute Youth - Can't Get Better...
Off their debut EP of the same title, here’s the video and song Can’t Get Better Than This from duo Parachute Youth. Loving the instrumentals on this. It’s a great, slightly French house and disco pop influenced upbeat song. It has major remix potential. At times, it also sounds a bit like 90’s dance trax. Looking forward to hearing more from Parachute Youth to hear how...

Wickedly noisy and industrial
Neosignal remixed Noisia’s track Sigma, slowing the beat down and creating a very industrial and noisy version. It’s pure evil. Check it out. The duo are German producers, not surprising considering the sound of this remix.

Star Slinger's remix of We Found Love
Last week, I shared Star Slinger’s amazing Mount Kimbie remix. Since then, he also released his remix of Rihanna’s We Found Love. Get ready to be blown away. I might like this more than the Mount Kimbie Before I Move Off remix. Or do I?

Merry Christmas!
Please excuse my absence these couple of days, though I’m usually somewhat absent on the weekends anyway. Been busy with the whirlwind known as the Holidays. Hope you are all having a lovely Christmas and though this may be belated for folks in other time zones, here’s some quiet winter music to end the jolly celebrations as we look forward to the end of year festivities next...

Coheed and Cambria's Xmas gift
This is a side of Coheed we don’t often get to hear, but just for us for the holidays, Coheed and Cambira covered Simon and Garfunkel’s April Come She Will. Claudio has never sounded more soothing, or has he? Does this whet our appetite until Coheed and Cambria finally drop their next, highly anticipated album, or does it make us more thirsty?

Space on Couch for Two
Sarah McLachlan has mostly disappeared from the scene for awhile now, though I did catch her at the final Lilith Fair (somewhat unsuccessful revival). I have sooooo much respect for the lady. Sooo much. I do like her music a lot too. Most of all, it’s so impressive how much she gives back to the community and how many endeavors she’s involved in. These days, she’s been keeping...

Levels remix in full
Hmm. I guess the Skrillex remix of top club anthem Levels by Avicii awhile ago wasn’t the “full” version at over 3 minutes long. Skrilly just shared this almost five minute long version on youtube and marked it as [Full]. So, fine, here it is again, this time it’s the true, start to finish complete version of Levels with its more than fair share of super hard wobbling. What...

There SHOULD be a film for Symmetry, it totally sounds like an entertaining,...

Star Slinger remixed Mount Kimbie!
Here’s British hip hop and electronic producer Star Slinger’s awesome remix of Mount Kimbie’s Before I Move Off. Staying electric on here today so far, though in extremely different arenas of electronica.
Below is the original Before I Move Off from Mount Kimbie. The original is a signature example of Mount Kimbie’s glitchy, minimalist, post-dubstep sound. Star...
